Acting and Directing the Song

Professor of directing and associate head of the School of Performance and Cultural Industries at the University of Leeds George Rodosthenous taught a masterclass with music composer Dimitris Zavros.

The group explored the nature and limitations of a solo performance – be it a song in a larger theatrical event, or a cabaret performance – but also the function of performance with non-verbal narratives. The use of music as exclusive text and the creation of a narrative without the use of words was the main stimulus for the creation of a short scene. The group focused on the use of hands through “hand choreographies” and explored how music and text create images. Finally, the group focused on tackling ensemble scenes.
