Identity

The Drama School of the National Theatre was founded at the same time as the National Theatre in May 1930 with the aim of “systematic effort for the best education of actors”. From that date the School has been in continuous operation and has played an important role in the development of contemporary theatre.

The Drama School of the National Theatre offers a three year study course, free of charge. Attendance is compulsory. The entrance examinations, using a transparent system, are conducted on an annual basis.

The School is based in Athens and is housed in the “School – Irini Papa”, an exemplary architectural restored complex at 52 Piraeus Street, Neo Faliro, which has a 500-seat amphitheater and three additional classrooms, a library, an open – air theatre and a tree-lined forecourt.

In 2018-19 in addition to the actors’ department a department for the training of directors was established. This provides young directors with practical and theoretical training.

Students of the school were among others: Dimitris Horn, Mary Aroni, Vaso Manolidou, Thanos Kotsopoulos, Alexis Solomos Anna Synodinou, Nikos Kourkoulos, Melina Mercouri, Alekos Alexandrakis. The Drama School had important people of theatre as teachers such as:Emilios Veakis, Fotos Politis, Dimitris Rontiris, Katina Paxinou, Takis Mouzenidis, Angelos Terzakis, Giannis Sideris, Emilios Chourmuzios etc.
